Hypnotherapy explained

Solution focused hypnotherapy recognises that individuals are the experts in finding solutions to their own problems.  This means that the therapist role is to support the client to find these solutions.

In hypnotherapy we do this by focusing the attention so that the conscious and subconscious minds come together and focus on the same aspect.  In this way we have access to the subconscious mind to promote positive changes and assist goal-setting.  A lot of our worries and troubles are based in subconscious thoughts and behaviours.  In hypnotherapy we can bypass the conscious mind to assist positive change.  In that sense other therapies do not have the same benefits as us.

We use trance which is very normal in many ways as we go in and out of trance every day.  A person is in a trance state during rapid eye movement (REM) phase of sleep, when reading a book, watching television or driving a car.  It is just a focused state of attention where external matters are blocked out.  Have you ever driven for a while and wondered how you got to the destination?  Whilst watching television you may have become so engrossed that you did not hear someone call your name?  These are simply trance states and we replicate this in hypnotherapy.  You are always in control and cannot be made to do anything out of character or silly.

The first part of hypnotherapy consists of solution focused brief therapy (SFBT) methods.  This includes; scaling and goal-setting.  The client is supported to continually train the brain to focus on solutions rather than problems.  Homework tasks may be agreed outside of sessions to aid improvements.
